Backup rings are generally manufactured of hard thermoplastics and are used to bridge large extrusion gaps in the seal, to withstand higher operating pressures, pressure peaks and higher temperatures, even with rapid linear movements, in combination with an elastomeric sealing element. For easier assembly, they are also produced in slotted form.
